The Fivecoat Home

Built in 2021

This stunning custom home was built and completed in 2021 by Justin & Ashley Fivecoat on a lot steeped in history. The original house on the lot was built in 1929. In 2004, the home underwent a massive renovation, including the addition of a portico, a pool, and a pool house to the expansive property. However, tragedy struck, and a fire destroyed the home, leaving only the newly added structures. Although the lot changed hands three times, it remained without a house for thirteen years.

Being Terrell residents, Justin and Ashley drove by the prime piece of real estate often, and Justin long dreamt of building a home on the vacant lot. In a stroke of serendipity in early 2020, the opportunity presented itself, and the couple purchased the property to embark on their new adventure. Though no strangers to construction, and despite having extensively renovated each of their previous residences in Terrell, this was their first new home build. This project presented its own unique challenges, including working around the existing structures, which required creative solutions to integrate them seamlessly into the new design. Another challenge is one of the home's most unique features - a basement. Building a basement in Texas clay is notoriously difficult, but their unwavering persistence and determination paid off. The basement now serves as both a functional space and a cozy wine cellar, adding a distinctive and unique touch to the home.

While the home captures a Hill Country modern aesthetic, the Fivecoat's infused elements of classic English architecture are evident in the parapets located at each end of the house. This balance of styles reflects their boundless creativity and meticulous attention to detail. Every design decision, from the paint to the tile and cabinetry, showcases the couple’s deep-rooted love for art and design, inspired by their shared interests and travels. Jason Jones, a close friend and experienced interior designer, played a crucial role in the project. His input was instrumental in refining the design choices, ensuring the home’s aesthetic remained cohesive and true to their vision. A special touch throughout the home is the inclusion of gas lanterns from Bevelo in New Orleans, one of the family’s favorite design elements. The lanterns add warmth and charm to both the interior and exterior and serve as a nostalgic reminder of a cherished place they love. Another key design element is the expansive windows, which flood the home with natural light and allow the family to soak in the beauty of their 2.5+ acre property, seamlessly connecting indoor living spaces with nature outside.

To complement the new home, the original pool house, complete with an outdoor patio and kitchen, was recently renovated to better match the modern design. The updated structure now integrates seamlessly with the overall look of the property. Additionally, a new garage was added, enhancing the estate's practicality and style. Together, Justin and Ashley have created a unique and timeless home, blending
