The Lucas Home
Built in 1956

TOH 2024-3.jpg

Step inside this sprawling ranch-style home belonging to Matt and Tori Lucas, an exceptional example of mid-century architecture built in 1956 by Raymond and his wife Bess Ed Kelpen. Raymond Kelpen, along with his father William, were the proprietors of the then-famous Kelpen Ice Cream Company, which had Terrell roots dating back to 1913.

In 1973, the Kelpens sold the home to Tom and Alison Norton, who were known to host matches for the Terrell Tennis Association during the Ben Gill Open, Manley Brittain Tournament, and the Patsy Rickman Memorial on the private tennis court in the backyard. Their son, Randy Snow, spent many hours on this court honing his craft. Randy Snow became a three-time medalist in the Paralympics, competing in wheelchair racing, wheelchair tennis, and wheelchair basketball. He was the first Paralympian inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame.

In 1983, the Nortons sold the home to Adger and Glenna Satterfield. Mr. Satterfield is one of the founders and President of Madix, Terrell’s largest privately-owned employer. In 1998 the home was purchased by Marianna Lott, who sold it to Glen and Paige Beesly in 2008 and finally to Matt and Tori Lucas, who have lived there since 2010.

The Lucas family has updated the home throughout, choosing to highlight its midcentury origin while adding an upscale modern aesthetic. Its open floor plan and stress-free livability are enhanced by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a sparkling swimming pool, patio, fireplace, pickleball court, and ½-acre yard overlooking Mayor Carmona’s estate in the distance.

The Lucas family loves to entertain. Their newly remodeled kitchen (completed this fall) and dining room/ lounge make ideal settings for dinner parties. They host Christmas for Tori’s extended family every year, following a decades-long tradition started by Tori’s great-grandmother, Margaret Clayton.

Matt and Tori, along with their two young children, Eleanor and Everett, always look forward to returning to their vibrant and energy-filled home, where bright colors and a welcoming atmosphere are on display. A true reflection of Terrell’s warmth and community spirit, the Lucas Home is a must-see on this year’s Christmas Home Tour!
